What is HS Code (Harmonized System) & How to Find It? Customs Tariff & Duty Classification Guide

A practical reference guide on 6-digit global HS Codes and 12-digit national customs tariff numbers (GTIP), finding accurate commodity codes, calculating tariffs, and verifying inspection requirements.

1. What is an HS Code? Structure & Global Standard

The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (HS Code) is an internationally standardized numerical method of classifying traded products developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO). The first 6 digits are globally identical across more than 200 member countries, while individual nations add additional digits (such as the 12-digit GTIP in Turkey) for national tariffs, quotas, and statistical tracking.

2. Breaking Down the 12-Digit Tariff Code

  • Digits 1-2 (Chapter): Broad economic sector and raw material classification (e.g., Chapter 72 for Iron and Steel).
  • Digits 3-4 (Heading): Specific product category within the chapter.
  • Digits 5-6 (Subheading / Global HS Code): Universal 6-digit classification recognized worldwide.
  • Digits 7-8 (Combined Nomenclature - CN Code): European Union common customs tariff alignment.
  • Digits 9-12 (National Statistical Breakdown): Country-specific regulatory, tax, and duty distinctions.

3. How to Identify the Correct HS Code & Importance

Correct classification dictates import duties, VAT, antidumping measures, pre-shipment inspection certificates, and mandatory African waivers. Misclassification can lead to substantial fines, back-taxes, and port delays. A.T.C. Africa Trade Center assists exporters and importers with compliant HS classification for seamless African and global trade.
